What can I say! An amazing experience not the first time we had done this trip but this captain certainly out sailed the rest! Captain Marta was amazing so knowledgeable and managed to get amazing sightings of pilot whales in such an ethical manner which ment we got really close up with the whales on their own terms. The food was great the swim spots fantastic and the experience from start to finish amazing. Only 6 of us on the boat so no over crowding pushing or blocking views. Well worth that little bit extra. We even got the sails out and learnt how to maximise the wind available, such an excellent experience.
Wonderful morning’s sailing, with skipper, Mauricio, knowledgeable & and experienced, with perfect conditions during our 3-hour voyage.
There were several other boats doing similar and their captains share information, with the odd exception (!), so tracking resident whale and dolphin pods is almost 100% guaranteed.
And we were not disappointed!
After 45 minutes, we found our first pod, with the male leading the way & five females following – magical.
After spending about ¼ hour alongside, we relocated to a second, larger pod of a dozen, no male in sight, he was diving down to 1,000 metres to catch food (giant squid) for his family, then would return for them. The group included two newly born calves – one perhaps born in the previous 24 hours, so being supported by its mother, helping it to breath & learn to swim on its own.
Spent more time with them, but always maintaining a safe & respectful distance.
Mauricio would move his yacht a little further ahead, allowing them to come toward us – quite enchanting.
Thereafter, we headed back to a secluded cove and moored on a buoy for a light lunch. There was an opportunity to swim but at just 21°C, we politely declined and returned to port.
Highly recommend and would suggest trying a yacht rather than a motorised cruiser. There are three large catamarans, holding 100+ passengers, there were four on our trip, so much more chance of interaction with the crew – of one.
